Mental disorder has become a common subject in the film. However, the portrayals of mental health are often distorted to a negative perception of this generally stigmatized issue. Such as the leading character Conrad in film Ordinary People. 

Conrad is deeply affected by the death of his older brother. He typically suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and survivor’s guilt over his brother’s death. He returns to everyday life after a four-month stay in a psychiatric hospital. He alienates himself from his friends and family intentionally.  Conrad’s self- isolation is indeed a hauntingly realistic depiction of the ones who are emotionally devastated by the past and suffocated in the present. He finds himself unable to let anyone into his heart and it’s heartbreaking to watch. He fails to control his emotion. The world would be more peaceful if everyone treats mental illness in a  humanistic approach rather than in a frightening manner.

Like Jennifer  Lawrence said, “people take medicine for diabetes, and people take medicine for asthma, but as soon as you take medicine for the mind, there’s such a stigma to it”.

What is a bipolar disorder?
Everybody experience shits in moods in response to life’s events. But some people’s moods fluctuate up and down dramatically beyond their own control. What are the early warning signs of bipolar disorder? One early bipolar symptom may be hypomania. People with bipolar disorder might feel really high and impulsive and shows racing thoughts and rapid speech all of a sudden and go through depressive episodes, feeling hopeless and showing lack of interest and pleasure in things in life out of the blue.

Ultimately, He was then sent to a  state mental facility for 8 months long. He gets out on a plea bargain and he goes back to live with his parents. Pat attempts to smarten up and win back Nicky. Nicky moves on but not to Pat. Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) one day. Tiffany is terribly depressed because of her husband’s death.  Will they be good buddies?
