The First-Timer’s Travel Guide to Taipei: Things To Do in Taipei

When you first come to Taiwan, there are lots of things you can do in Taipei. Here are some suggestions for you, so next time you can arrange the schedule by yourself if traveling to Taiwan!

1. Visit the City on a Hop On Hop Off Tour

It’s a good way to get acquainted with a new city on a Hop On Hop Off tour. You can get on and off these double decker buses as many times as you want for a set period of time depends on the ticket you buy. There are 2 set routes through Taipei’s top attractions like Taipei 101, National Palace Museum, Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Ximending, and more. Not only will you see Taipei’s top sights, but you can also use it as a way of getting around the city. The tickets cost about NT300-NT1,200 according to the selection.

2. Eat Street Food and Go Shopping at a Night Market

Night markets are synonymous with Taiwan. Each night market has its own feature. If you have time, you should go to a different one every night. If not, then Shilin and Raohe are two that you absolutely must go to. Open daily from 5PM to 12MN, you’ll find great bargains and some of Taipei’s best street food at these open air night markets. It will spend about 2-3 hours in visiting. There are some interesting games you can try in the night market, too. Such as shooting, pinball, fishing, ring toss game, etc.

3. Get a Killer View of Taipei from the Taipei 101 Observatory

There’s no better place to get a bird’s eye view of Taipei than at the Taipei 101 Observatory. Located on the 89th floor, the elevators will shoot you up to the observatory in a mind-numbing 37 seconds. It sometimes takes some time to wait, but the scenery is worth of it. Tickets normally cost TWD 600. You can stay there for about 1-2 hours to have an afternoon tea with the beautiful view.

4. Get Artsy at a Creative Park

Huashan and Songshan Creative Parks are former factories that were repurposed into full-time arts and cultural venues. Apart from holding art exhibits and live cultural shows, they host fashion shows, product design expos, art seminars, and lifestyle bazaars all within an historic, industrial setting. If you are interest in exhibitions, you may have some look at their official website. Some of the exhibits need tickets but most of them are free.

5. Go Shopping in Ximending

Filled with trendy shops and boutiques, the Ximending area is where young Taiwan goes to shop and kill time. There are sometimes buskers performs in front of the MRT export. If you’ve been to Osaka or Seoul, then you’ll find that it’s similar to Shinsaibashi or Myeongdong.
