Task 1

1.Describe what your life would be like if you were not allowed to use the cellphone for a month. Explain why. Please include details and examples in your explanation.

To be honest, I can』t imagine my life without my cellphone. If I was forbidden to use the cellphone for a month, my life would be very painful and miserable. The main reason is that it』s an essential way for me to contact my families and friends. With a cellphone, I』m able to make phone calls and text others. Second, my cellphone has been the main source of happiness in my life now. When I feel exhausted and need to take a break from work or study, I often entertain myself with the cellphone. I can listen to music, watch amusing videos and play games when I feel bored and need to find a way to kill my time. If I was not allowed to use the cellphone, I would feel empty and my life would be messy.

2. Someuniversities require students to attend language classes. Others require themto attend computer classes. Which do you think is more important?

Without a doubt, I would say attending language classes is way more important than computer classes. First of all, any language is a tool for communication. If students could speak another language, they will be able to communicate with more people. Secondly, language is a mirror of its culture. Students could learn a lot about their culture, which could broaden their horizons and enrich their life. Thirdly, some students are interested in learning a second language. They are willing to spend much time on it. It would offer a great opportunity for them to further their education overseas. It might be beneficial to their future career. At the same time, they could experience a totally different lifestyle. Last but not least, they could travel to different places without any travel agency.

3.Describe one family member who has different characteristics from other members.

I would like to talk about my beloved mom who is adventurous, humorous andwarm-hearted. First of all, she is the most adventurous person I have ever seenin my life. She is not afraid of taking risks at all. This May, she investedall of her saving in the stock market. Unlike others, she made quite a fortune.As a 50-year-old woman, she is eager to try various extreme sports, such assky-diving, surfing as well as scuba-diving. Besides, she is so humorous thatshe would easily cheer me up. Sometimes, I would feel depressed or upset, it iseasy for her to cheer me up with a funny story made up by her. Last but notleast, she is always willing to help others when they are in trouble.

4.What are the benefits of talking to older family members?

Well, Chinese people attach much importance to the family. In our culture, senior citizens in every family are just like treasure, because we can benefit a lot from them.

First of all, old people usually have rich life experience. It is definitely a great idea to ask them for help when we come across some obstacles, frustrations and difficulties. They are always willing to give you a hand. Besides, older family members are usually wiser than young people. They could give you some useful advice when you feel confused about life. I still remember last time when I broke up with my girlfriend, it was my grandpa that helped me through that rough period of time. That』s why I take so much delight in chatting with my grandparents.

5.Describe a present you have given to others. Explain why you think it is important.

The present I』d like to describe is a book about keeping a healthy life, which I sent to my mum as a birthday gift. It』s significant for a couple of reason. For one thing, the book may help my mum improve her health condition by giving some useful suggestions on her diet. It contains the introduction of various food and their nutrients. Also the book shows how to develop a healthy diet in an accessible way. Moreover, the part about regular excises brings benefits to my mum』s health as well. The book recommends some simple excises that are not physical demanding but effective, so it』s a wonder gift for my mum.
