Younger students experience school bullying morefrequently than older ones, and male students arebullied more than their female peers, a surveyfound.

The 21st Century Education Research Institute, athink tank in Beijing, surveyed 1,003 students from12 schools in the city, and found that nearly half ofstudents have been intentionally bumped orknocked down by classmates.

About 6% said they are targeted by bullies on campus almost every day.

Students at ordinary schools experience more bullying than peers at top institutions, andchildren from impoverished families are more likely to be bullied at school, according to thesurvey.

Being bullied can have an adverse impact on a child's personal development and academicperformance, according to Zhou Jinyan, a researcher at Beijing Normal University's CapitalInstitute for Economics of Education.

"Children being bullied will find it hard to trust others," Zhou said. "They may lack self-confidence and often feel anxiety, anger, resentment or depression. These emotions willfurther undermine their ability to control their own life."
