托福閱讀對速度的要求是很高的，平均每道題的做題時間只有大約1分30秒，因此提高閱讀速度的重要性不言而喻。如果想在有限的時間內把所有內容都讀完並仔細琢磨是不可能的，所以這時就需要你了解什麼內容需要詳讀，什麼內容需要略讀。做托福閱讀時一定要學會詳略得當。

托福閱讀需要詳讀的內容是根據托福閱讀考點來看的，也就是托福閱讀各個題型的出題點。比如托福閱讀文章內容小結題考察學生對文章主要觀點/主要方面的把握，一般學生可以文章首段大致把握文章主題嗎，再依據每段的首句(往往是主題句)來把握段落內容，最後整合出答案要點。

托福閱讀中的轉折、比較、因果等邏輯關係是常考到的，這些邏輯關係可以用於辭彙題、細節題、修辭目的題等題型的解答中。相關的信號詞如下：

轉折邏輯：but;however;yet;nevertheless;indeed;actually;practically;virtually;conversely;on the other hand等;

比較邏輯：like,unlike,different from等比較辭彙;as…as比較句型;

因果邏輯：because;reason;since;for;therefore;thus;as a result;eventually;consequently等。

托福閱讀需要略讀什麼?

但是一些內容是沒有必要詳讀的，這些內容包括文章中的例子內容，比如說到某個具體的人物時， 或者有著明確的舉例信號詞： for example;for instance;take…as/for an example;such as;it is likely that…;it is no accidence that…但是結合以上所述的詳讀內容，例子之前的觀點部分是要讀的。除了例子之外，一些明顯的重複、並列和解釋性內容也可以略去不讀，比如and; also; furthermore;moreover;likewise等信號詞引導的並列;that』s to say，in other words等引導的解釋或者重複等。
