雅思口語:describe a decision made by others that you disagreed

This topic reminds me of a decision I made a year ago when I decided to drop out of college and follow my own path, not the crowd. After I told my decision to my parents, they just freaked out, and they were strongly against it. They told me the importance of a decent degree when it comes to hunting for jobs in China, and they insisted that I should finish college no matter what.

But the thing is, my college is located in a remote area, I mean, an underdeveloped city. I couldn』t see my future in this city. I want to work in a vibrant city, you know, like Shanghai or Beijing. But the city I was studying in was nothing like that and it couldn』t offer me what I want.

If I stayed there for four years, I would end up being an ordinary person, with no dreams, no ambition and no bright future. Well, I understand my parents』 decision and I can』t blame them, 『cause they are pretty traditional and conservative. In their opinion, a girl is supposed to follow a certain lifestyle. For example, graduate from college, find a steady job, get married and start a family. But to me, that is not living, that is just not dying. I want to lead a life that』s worth living, you know.

So I just ignored my parents』 strong objection, and went ahead with my plan. I took a gap year trying to figure out what I truly want to do with my life, and now I started to apply to universities abroad, so here I am.

雅思口語語言點解析:

drop out of something = to leave school, college, etc. without finishing your studies 例如:

She started a degree but dropped out after only a year.

輟學的人叫做dropout (a person who leaves school or college before they have finished their studies) 例如:

a university with a high dropout rate

這裡要區分drop out和flunk out的區別:

flunk out of something = to have to leave a school or college because your marks/ grades are not good enough 有種「被勸退」的趕腳,例如:

He flunked out of college after four semesters.

the crowd = ordinary people, not special or unusual in any way 例如:

We all like to think we stand out from the crowd.

He prefers to be one of the crowd.

She』s quite happy to follow the crowd.

freak = if somebody freaks or if something freaks them, they react very strongly to something that makes them suddenly feel shocked, surprised, frightened, etc. 例如:

My parents really freaked (out) when they saw my hair.

Snakes really freak me out.

hunt for something = to look for something that is difficult to find 例如:

She is still hunting for a new job.

the thing is = used to introduce an important fact, reason or explanation 例如:

I』m sorry my assignment isn』t finished. The thing is, I』ve had a lot of other work this week.

vibrant = full of life and energy = exciting 例如:

Thailand is at its most vibrant during the New Year celebrations.

go ahead with something = to begin to do something, especially when somebody has given permission or has expressed doubts or opposition 例如:

The government intends to go ahead with its tax cutting plans.

gap year = a year that a young person spends working and/or travelling, often between leaving school and starting university 例如:

I』m planning to take a gap year and go backpacking in India.
