許淵沖先生從事文學翻譯長達六十餘年，翻譯集中在古詩英譯，譯作涵蓋中、英、法等語種，被譽為「詩譯英法唯一人」 ，翻譯《詩經》、楚辭》《唐詩三百首》《宋詞三百首》《西廂記》《紅與黑》《追憶似水年華》等中外名著。

2014年8月2日許淵沖榮獲國際翻譯界最高獎項之一的「北極光」傑出文學翻譯獎 ，系首位獲此殊榮亞洲翻譯家。

許先生翻譯的很多詩作不僅注重格律和押韻，而且讓原詩詞的美流溢散發出來，讓人讀來回味無窮。

床前明月光，

疑是地上霜。

舉頭望明月，

低頭思故鄉。

Before my bed a pool of night,

The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
