一、西方名人故事

邁克爾·喬丹

To remain optimistic and happy when you fail is more important than achieving success. 06.29.2014.

The positive attitude can help you get through troubles and win the battle in the long run. Temporary failures or success can only prove the periodic outcomes of your efforts. But the confidence and courage to treat failures will lead people to make the constant endeavor, so their whole life is a great success.

Michael Jordon was once cut from the school team. He missed thousands of shots and lost hundreds of games. He once said, 「 I failed over and over and over again, and that』s why I succeed.」 Without a positive attitude and strong will, one can』t come a long way to win out in the great battle, which is called life.

居里夫人

All scientific discoveries should be shared among all scientists all around the world; the government and business should not keep any discoveries secret. 10.28.2012, 02.03.2012 NA

Of course, for those great scientists like Madam Curie who shared her discovery of radium without considering her financial distress and a huge amount of money offered to buy her discovery, the whole world will show respect. However, in reality, we should recognize that there are mainly two driving forces behind discoveries, namely eagerness to serve the people and to make profit.

奧本海默

Some scientists are responsible for the negative impacts that are made by their discoveries. 8.25.2013, 11.08.2008 NA

Also, it』s the responsibility of the government to guarantee the best utilization of these discoveries. Governments have the power to prevent the tragic scenarios most of the times and public awareness is also important to control the situation. The nuclear bombs, for example, have the potential for leveling the world many times, and it』s the government treaties and public awareness that keep the dangers in check. Oppenheimer had no control over the use of the nuclear weapons.

二、歷史典故

曹操

In terms of teamwork, those who cannot take any criticism from other people can never succeed. 02.24.2012, 12.02.2011 NA, 02.13.2010

Furthermore, taking criticism leads to improvement. Just as one Chinese proverb goes, criticism is to defects what medicine is to diseases. Only by seeing the defects clearly can people have the motivation and ways to improve themselves. Numerous cases in history proved the importance of taking criticism. Cao Cao, a military leader in the Three Kingdoms Period, rewarded those who criticized him and even made self-criticism. He never stopped learning from these criticizing voices and improved himself until he succeeded in reuniting the North parts of China.

項羽

To remain optimistic and happy when you fail is more important than achieving success. 06.29.2014.

Optimism can also help to attract the most capable people around you, so that you can enjoy the biggest advantage competing with others. The founder of Han dynasty, Liu Bang was a good example. Fighting against Xiang Yu, the most capable military leader at that time, Liu Bang almost lost all of the battles, but he never gave up. His persistent and optimistic attitude as well as outstanding management skills helps him rally a group of talents and he won the final war, resulting in the true glory in his life and laying the foundation of his new Dynasty.

曹沖

If a person wants to be successful in life, knowledge gained through study is more important than the ability to be creative. 10.15.2006

Knowledge gained from textbook which is the collection of second hand experience is not enough to deal with the ever-changing situations unless it is grasped by the creative minds. There is a story in China which is well-known, inspiring generation after generation. Cao Chong, the son of Cao Cao who was a famous military leader in Three Kingdoms Period, once solved a problem that puzzled many knowledgeable scholars. He succeeded in weighing an elephant at that time when there was no advanced scales to weigh the heavy object. He first put the elephant into a boat and recorded the water level on the boat. Later he unloaded the elephant and put some stones into the same boat until the boat sank to the same level and then weighed the stones one after another. By calculating the weight of the stones he got that of the elephant. Cao Chong became a famous historical figure later. His creativity was very important in his rise to fame and success.

諸葛亮

Furthermore, without creativity, students who believe in the knowledge in the textbook blindly may make some terrible mistakes later. The story also happened in the Three Kingdoms Period when Zhuge Liang, another eminent military leader had to punish with penalty death one of his favorite subordinates who read a lot of military books but lost a critical battle because he couldn』t use the knowledge according to the concrete conditions.

三、on reading

Modern complexity has brought about not only more choices but also more temptations and distractions. Chatting, dining, partying, and revelling have occupied too much of our time. We may find ourselves wanting in reading experiences, realizing that what looks like a neon-decorated mirage is indeed a desert in terms of cultural and spiritual life. Reading may come to our rescue when we are trapped in such a desert.

A thoughtful life is the first benefit we can get through reading. Take history books for example. History is appealing. It』s the story of people, famous or infamous, intelligent and brainless, industrious and negligent. It』s the story of what angered, saddened or pleased them. Reflecting upon their lives and comparing ours with theirs, we may have a deeper understanding about the world. Living without reflecting is what propels us to embrace the meaningless entertainment while forgetting the significance of our life.

Reading may also give hope to both individuals, communities and the whole nation. For individuals, zero or poor reading and writing skills may mean low incomes and chronic psychological strain due to the social exclusion that illiteracy can incur. For communities, residents』 low reading and writing skills may mean poor school district performance and low property value. For societies and nations, citizens』 low literacy skills may mean a serious lack of productive force. Reading can get us away from these ruins and open the doors for us toward a brilliant future.

There has been a widespread misunderstanding that reading is mere rote memorization of rigid sets of facts and would serve no useful ends other than honing students』 memorization techniques. For numerous exams and for the high expectations of their teachers and parents, they have to burn the midnight oil, reading. Yet reading is not supposed to be so mind-numbingly tedious, it could be more interesting so long as they are not misled on the purpose of reading.

All in all, let』s pay the overdue attention to reading; let』s break the ugly misunderstanding and restore its natural beauty; let』s act and see what a wonderful world reading can build for us; let』s pick up our books and remember the fact that the best place to start is with ourselves and the long-awaited wonder is hiding in our books.
