來自珠海的 Lisa 想知道動詞 say、speak、talk 和 tell 之間的區別究竟是什麼。想必大家對這四個詞都不陌生，但是在平日生活中到底應該如何最恰當地來使用它們呢？在本期節目里，我們就來具體講講它們之間的區別。

我們先把這四個詞分成兩組：say and tell 和 talk and speak，這樣分組的原因是每一組中兩個單詞的意思有重疊。

大家都知道，動詞 say 的意思是「說話」，而動詞 tell 的意思是「告訴某人信息」，比如我們可以說：

Tell me about your holiday.

給我講講你度假怎麼樣啊。

「Tell me about your holiday.」這裡用「tell me」來請他人告訴我們一個情況，所以不能說：

Say about your holiday.

但是我們可以說「talk about your holiday」或「speak about your holiday」。

在使用動詞 tell 的時候，它後面緊跟的應該是「被告知信息的那一方」。來聽兩個例句。

我告訴過你他會讓你失望的。

She told her mother she passed all her exams.

她告訴了她媽媽她通過了全部考試。

但在使用動詞 say 的時候，後面可以直接跟上要說的事情。比如：

She said to her mother she passed all her exams.

她告訴了她媽媽她通過了全部考試。

在上面的例句中，「She said to her mother she passed all her exams」，「said」 後面跟著介詞「to」。大家需要記住的是：you say something TO someone, but you tell someone something。

不過在日常生活中，說「She told her mother she passed all her exams」要比「She said to her mother she passed all her exams」更自然。請聽下面這兩句話，你覺得哪個說法是對的？

She said hello to her mother.

She told her mother hello.

正確的句子應該是「She said hello to her mother」，因為與人打招呼是我們用行動「表達、表述」的事情，所以不能「tell 告訴」一個人我們在和他打招呼，而應該是「say hello」。

當然 say 和 tell 都可以用在間接引語的句子里，比如：「Martin said he was in a hurry」或「Martin told me he was in a hurry」；換成直接引語可以說：「Martin said: 'I』m in a hurry!'」或者「Martin told me: 'I』m in a hurry!'」

接著我們再來看看 say and tell 的一些其它常用方法。首先，動詞 tell 可以表示「命令，吩咐」的意思。

The teacher told me to write an essay on birds.

老師讓我寫一篇關於鳥的文章。

Tell me what to do!

告訴我應該怎麼做。

Tell 還可以表達「知道，明白」的意思。

動詞 say 也同樣有一些不顯為人知的意思，比如，say 可以表達「認為或相信」的意思。請聽兩個例句。

I say we should move to the countryside this year.

我覺得咱們今年應該搬到鄉下去住。

They say it』s best to get eight hours sleep.

人們說最好要保證八小時睡眠。

下面我們來講講 talk and speak。這兩個詞相似處很多，都帶有「談論」的意思。

上面兩個例句的意思都是「我們得坐下談談這件事情了」，但它們之間有區別嗎？單詞 speak 用在上面的這個語境中比 talk about 顯得更嚴肅些。請聽下面的這個例句，speak 體現出的嚴肅性在這個句子中更明顯。

I need to speak to Michael about his timekeeping.

我需要和 Michael 談談他的守時問題。

這裡用「speak to」暗示說話人對邁克爾的不守時行為不滿意，並會對這個行為做出批評。

Speak 還有哪些用法？當我們想表達「說一門外語」時，就可以使用動詞 speak，比如「說英語 speak English」。請聽一個例句。

Generally speaking, the verbs 『speak』 and 『talk』 are used in similar ways.

Strictly speaking, you should send it back to the factory.

嚴格地說，你應該把它送去返廠維修。

我們常用介詞 to 來和這兩個單詞搭配使用，to 後面接賓語，賓語後接介詞 about 來概括談論、涉及的內容。

I』m going to talk to Fan about the new timeline.

我要和 Fan 談一談與新時間表有關的事情。

Talk to Fan about something. 不過，我們不需要總是在句子中提及說話者的對象，因此可以省略介詞 to 及其賓語。

He』s talking about the new price plan on Tuesday.
