四十三. Two Travelers

Two men were going along a lonely road and talking of what they would do if a bear or wolves attack(進攻)them. 「Never fear,」said the larger one, 「I can protect myself and you too, so there will be no danger. There is nothing in the forest for any man to fear, except a hungry bear, and I'd like to meet the bear that could be amatch for me.」

Just at that time, a huge bear appeared in the road and moved towards the two men.

The two men ran for a tree. The one who had spoken so bravely reached it first and climbed to safety. The smaller man，being left to face the bear alone, threw himself on the ground and lay as if dead. When the bear came up, he smelt the man on the ground and went away. Then the larger man came down from the tree and said, 「What did the bear say in your ear? You seemed like old friends.」

「Oh,」the other answered, 「he told me never to trust a boaster(自誇者)」

【漢語翻譯】

兩位旅行者

兩個人沿著一條荒涼的(lonely)公路(road)前行，他們談到如果遭遇一隻熊(bear)或狼群(wolves)進攻該如何應付。

「不要害怕(fear)，」個頭較大的那人說，「我可以保護咱們倆，不會有危險(danger)。在那片森林裡沒有什麼好怕的，除了(except) 一頭飢餓的熊之外。我倒是想碰到一隻能成為我對手(match)的熊」。

正在那時，一隻巨大的熊出現在公路上，朝這兩個人趕來。

這兩個人向一棵樹跑去。之前講話很勇敢(bravely)的那個人先跑到樹下，然後爬到一個安全(safety)位置。個頭較小的人現在要獨自面對那隻熊，於是他就躺在地上，彷彿(as if)死了(dead) 一樣。當那隻熊走近時，它聞了聞地上的那人，然後離開了．接著個頭較大的人從樹上下來，問，「那隻熊在你耳朵(ear)邊說什麼呢？你們看起來像是老朋友一樣。」「哦，」另一位回答道，「它告訴我決不要信任(trust)吹牛者」。

In only fifty years, English has developed into the language most widely spoken and used in the world. English is the working language of most international organizations(組織), international trade and tourism (旅遊業).

Businessmen and tourists often come to China without being able to speak Chinese.Chinese businessmen, taxi drivers and students talk with them using English. English is also the language of world culture, such as pop music and the Internet. You can listen to English songs on the radio or use English to communicate with people around the world through the Internet. With so many people communicating in English every day, it will become more and more important to have a good knowledge of English.
