In the year that Cannes celebrates its 70th anniversary it's fitting that the opening film – Arnaud Desplechin's Les Fantômes d'Ismaël (Ismael's Ghosts) – is a more-French-than-French affair. The Gallic auteur is a firm friend of the festival, with several of his previous films, including Ma Vie Sexuelle, La Sentinelle, and Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian debuting in competition. Mathieu Amalric heads up an ensemble of French acting royalty that includes Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Louis Garrel. Alejandro González Iñárritu has established himself as one of the great technicians of contemporary cinema, so it makes sense he would be the first mainstream director to turn to virtual reality. Developed over four years, Carne y Arena (Flesh and Sand) is a six-minute 360-degree installation designed for solo viewing that follows a group of migrants from Mexico into the US and shows, with visceral "you-are-there" flourish, the hardships these immigrants endure even without Donald Trump's border wall in place. Jeannette: The childhood of Joan of Arc《童女貞德》

French director Bruno Dumont explores Joan of Arc's spiritual and patriotic awakening as a child in this musical film based on Charles Péguy's 1910 poem The Mystery of the Charity of Joan of Arc, which looked at the visions that inspired her to join the fight against the English during the Hundred Years' War. Dumont focuses on how the young girl transformed from peasant to warrior, arguing that: "Everyone knows her story in adult life and her end but I don't want to re-visit what's already been done. The Square《自由廣場》

Ruben Östlund has some issues with the contemporary art scene. "In the art world," the Swedish director told Variety, "you bring everything you do into a theory level, where it loses its contact with the outside world in many ways." He should know. His new film, starring Dominic West as a US artist showing off a new installation that's supposed to encourage consideration and humanistic regard, is loosely based on his own experience. Östlund once debuted an installation where two people enter a square space meant to symbolise a street intersection, and in that space they interact with each other following the courtesy and deference of motorists to pedestrians encouraged by traffic laws. Art should "remind us of those humanistic values," Östlund says. Bong Joon-ho has brought dark wit, intense emotionality, and jaw-dropping twists to a series of genre mashups: the monster movie The Host, murder mystery Mother, and dystopian action thriller Snowpiercer. Students of Michael Haneke's work know that the title of this film is likely to be ironic: the great Austrian filmmaker and two-time Palme d'Or winner is not known for his cheery disposition or feel-good vibes. Details have been kept tightly under wraps: all that is known is that Happy End is set in the French port of Calais and in London, and is billed as a portrait of a bourgeois family. The source material for Todd Haynes' Wonderstruck is Brian Selznick's YA book of the same name, which alternates pages of text with illustrations and was itself inspired by a documentary about deaf children's visual hyper-awareness. Echoing Selznick's approach, half of Haynes' Wonderstruck – which is set in 1927 and 1977 – will be silent, with a number of roles featuring deaf actors. Thirteen-year-old Millicent Simmonds stars as Rose, who runs away from home in search of her idol Lillian Mayhew (played by Julianne Moore), with Michelle Williams and Tom Noonan also featuring. Colin Farrell reunites with off-beat Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos for this psychological horror-thriller, following the success of dystopian dating drama The Lobster, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2015. Farrell stars as a surgeon whose idyllic family life takes a sinister turn after he develops a bond with a fatherless teenage boy, Martin (Barry Keoghan), forcing him to make a shocking sacrifice. Andrey Zvyagintsev is Russia's best known director. His 2014 film Leviathan was a hit at Cannes in 2014 – many felt it was robbed of the Palme d'Or – and it went on to win wide international acclaim and a nomination for the best foreign-language picture at the Oscars. Set in Moscow in the warm summer months, the film stars Maryana Spivak and Alexei Rozin as a couple whose son goes missing while their relationship is unravelling. With the tagline "Climate Changes, Truth Does Not", the follow-up to 2006's Inconvenient Truth updates the Oscar-winning documentary for a new era – one in which Donald Trump is the US President. Directed by husband-and-wife team Jon Shenk and Bonni Cohen, the documentary again follows former Vice President Al Gore as he travels the world sounding the alarm about climate change. The original film became one of the highest-grossing documentaries of all time, with Gore's high-tech global warming road show front and centre. This one doesn't aim to simply retell the same story, though. "An Inconvenient Truth has a very specific style that we were never looking to replicate," says Cohen. Robin Campillo was one of the screenwriters for 2008's Palme d'Or winner The Class; this year the Moroccan-born French filmmaker makes his directorial debut at Cannes with 120 Beats Per Minute. Set in the early 1990s, when HIV was still little known and understood, the film follows a group of activists who fought government inaction and public indifference to the virus under the slogan "Silence = Death". 羅賓•坎皮略是2008年金棕櫚獎獲獎影片《課室風雲》的編劇之一;今年,這位摩洛哥出生的法國電影人憑藉《每分鐘120擊》首次以導演身份亮相戛納電影節。故事背景設定在上世紀90年代初,當時人們對HIV還知之甚少,影片講述了一群社會活動家高舉「沉默=死亡」的標語,抗議政府對HIV的不作為以及公眾的冷漠。
