Where did you get such a dirty face,

My darling dirty-faced child?

I got it from crawling along in the dirt

And biting two buttons off Jeremy's shirt.

I got it from chewing the roots of a rose

And digging for clams1) in the yard with my nose.

I got it from peeking into a dark cave

And painting myself like a Navajo2) brave.

I got it from playing with coal in the bin

And signing my name in cement with my chin.

And giving the horrible dog a big hug.

And from having more fun than you've had in years.

賞析

謝爾·希爾弗斯坦(Shel Silverstein, 1930~1999)，美國詩人、插畫家、劇作家，也是20世紀最偉大的繪本作家之一。謝爾為孩子們創作了400多首詩歌，他的兒童詩集和繪畫風格風靡整個世界，其代表作為繪本《愛心樹》(The Giving Tree)，該書於1974年出版，轟動文壇，一舉奠定了他在美國兒童文學界的地位。

本詩以父母和孩童對話的口吻，刻畫了一個調皮、可愛的頑童形象，通過孩童的自述，列舉了孩子的一件件頑皮「劣跡」：在泥土裡爬滾，用鼻子挖蛤蜊，跟小夥伴摔跤打架，啃花根，探洞穴，玩黑炭，活脫脫一個天不怕地不怕的小魔王形象。詩歌以輕鬆、風趣而又略帶誇張的語言，描繪了童年時代的天真、頑皮、無憂、無懼。已經長大的你，有沒有從中找到自己的影子、想起久違的童年時光呢？
