1. rather than... 是……而不是……；與其……不如……；不願

[典例]

1). He ran rather than walked.

2).Rather than allow the vegetables to go bad, he sold them at half price與其讓蔬菜爛掉，他半價把它們賣掉。

[重點用法]

do A rather than do B = rather than do B, sb. does A 某人不做B卻做A A rather than B 是A而不是B

would rather do A than do B = would do A rather than do B 寧可做A而不做B prefer to do A rather than do B 最喜歡做A而不做B would rather sb. did/had done sth. 寧願某人做某事

注意：rather than表示客觀事實，它連接的並列成分可以是名詞、代詞、形容詞、介詞(短語)、動名詞、分句、不定式、動詞等。後接不定式時，不定式可以帶to，也可以不帶to。但rather than位於句首時，則只能接不帶to 的不定式。

2. settle down 舒適地坐下或躺下；（使）安靜、安頓、安心；習慣於新的生活方式/工作等

[典例]

1). She settled down in an armchair to read her book.

2). When are you going to marry and settle down? 你什麽時候結婚過上安定生活? [短語歸納] 與settle相關的短語：

settle down to… 使某人安下心來做…… settle (down) in ... 在……定居下來

settle a dispute/an argument/an issue 解決一爭端/爭論/問題

3. catch sight of 看見；瞥見

[典例]

He was happy to catch sight of an eagle flying in the sky. 見到一隻鷹在天上飛，他很高興。 [短語歸納] sight短語： lose sight of 看不見；不再看見 keep sight of 使能看得到；保持看得到的距離 at (the) sight of 一看到（就）

in/within sight 可以看見；在視線內 out of sight 看不見；在視線外

have good/poor sight/eyesight 視力好/差

4. have a gift for... 對……有天賦

[典例]

1). He has a gift for music. 他有音樂天才。

2). The young man is gifted in art. 那個小夥子有藝術天賦。

[重點用法]

have a gift for (doing) sth.= have the gift to do sth. 對……有天賦；有做某事的才能 a man of excellent gifts一個非常有才華的人 a gifted/telented person 一個有天賦的、有才華的人

be gifted at doing sth./in sth. 擅長

5. in the distance 在遠處；在遠方

[典例]

1). We can see the mountain in the distance.

2). Night fell. The hills in the distance turned dark blue. 夜色漸近，遠山變成了深藍色。 [

短語歸納]

distance短語：

at a distance隔一段距離；距離稍遠一些 from a distance從遠方

keep a distance別靠近

keep sb. at a distance對某人保持疏遠

6. as far as 遠到，直到；至於

[典例]

1). I』 ll walk with you as far as the post office.

2). I』 ve read as far as the third chapter. 我已讀到第三章了。

[短語歸納]

far短語：

as/so far as sb. knows 就某人所知 as far as sb. can see/tell/ remember 就某人看來/所說/所記得

as/so far as sb/sth is concerned 就某人/事物而言 far from sth 毫不；一點也不； 遠非 So far, so good. (諺) 到目前為止，一切都很順利。

7.manage to do 設法做

The box was heavy but he managed to carry it away.
