Hello everyone! This is Laura from Sayclass

Going to university can be a really exciting time. For many students, it』s the first time that they will live away from their parents, be independent and have a lot more freedoms. But going to university also means making a big decision: what career you want in the future. Now that I am older, I think that making this kind of big decision when you are only 17 or 18 doesn』t often lead you down the best path. We don』t know enough about ourselves or about the working world to really know what we want.

Parents often try to fill the gap and tell their children what they think is the best career for them. But, in my experience, parents don』t understand the new job market and economy that young workers are entering. My parents often give advice that doesn』t work in today』s economy.

Another problem is that even if we find a topic that really interests us, we may not like working in that field. For example, I studied international studies and I found it very fascinating, but when I left university, I realized I didn』t like many of the jobs in that field. I didn』t want to work in an office and write reports, and I didn』t want to work for the government. Since working in education, I have realized that I like being creative, working on projects and interacting with people. I like to have independence and I don』t like following a lot of rules.

When you think about what career you want, you shouldn』t think just about what topics interest you. You should think about how you want to spend your day and what environments help you thrive.

Before you start think about what career you want. Let』s review some new words we heard:

Now it is the end of April and in about two month, almost 8 million graduates will enter into the job market. What kind of job will you take? In fact as soon as we choose our major in university, we also chose our future job field.
