作為錄像之父,張培力(生於1957年)是一位當代藝術史上的開拓者。他的錄像作品時常專註於重複的行為——例如打碎鏡子,閱讀,洗滌,看著窗外,跳舞——這些熟悉但又打破常規的動作,透過鏡頭塑造出獨特的視角。雖然這些日常行為所帶來的意義堆積看似毫無意義且難以捉摸,但這些作品時常會引起對權利和政治的討論與思考。從張培力早期的繪畫和觀念藝術作品中對於藝術的表現與創作系統的批判,他的錄像作品顛覆了我們對於當代生活中藝術及娛樂的角色理解。1989年作為張培力專註錄像創作的轉折點,當時他曾疑惑世界上什麼事情是不受制約的(誰也不曾對那些制約的合理性提出疑問)?為什麼藝術偏偏例外?藝術命中注定就是提供娛樂?

此次展覽,將是張培力在美國美術館第一個研究性的展覽,試圖追溯其創作軌跡的源頭及發展,將展出自20世紀80年代後期的錄像到21世紀新的數字格式的錄像作品。張培力於1988年所創作的第一件錄像「30x30」記錄了一面鏡子被不停的打碎並修復的過程,並向觀眾呈現當時電視上所看不到的畫面。而作為這次展覽的重頭戲則是芝加哥藝術博物館最新收藏的作品(衛)字3。這件錄像記錄了藝術家反覆清洗一隻雞的過程,作品將會以1991年首次展覽時的呈現方式展出。他2007年的作品被展開四次的黑白風景則是一件可以與觀者產生互動的感應錄像裝置,它探索著圖像的並置,以及它們與觀者所處空間的關係。

The first video artist to work in China,Zhang Peili (Chinese, born 1957) is a pioneering figure in the history of contemporary art. Zhang』s distinctive videos focus on the repetition of actions– breaking a mirror, reading, washing, looking out the window, and dancing –that are familiar, yet rendered disorienting through Zhang』s use of perspective, close-up, and framing. Although the cumulative meaning of these routine actions seems elusive at first, his works often raise questions of power and subversion. Emerging from his critique of systems of representation and art-making in his early paintings and conceptual artworks, his videos upsetour understanding of the roles of art and entertainment in contemporary life.Writing in 1989 on the cusp of his transition to work only in video, Zhang pondered: 「But people never ask, what in this world is not subject toconstraints in some way (no one doubts the legitimacy of such constraints)? Whyis art an exception? Is art doomed to provide only entertainment?」

The exhibition, the first major survey of his work in an American museum, traces the development of his practice from his earliest experiments with video in thelate 1980s to new digital formats in the 2000s. His first video, 30x30 (1988) records Zhang repeatedly breaking and mending a mirror and confronts the viewer with images that are not readily seen on television. Document on Hygiene No. 3, a new acquisition, anchors the exhibition. For the first time since 1991, this video of Zhang』s prolonged washing of a chicken will be displayed according to its original, spatial installation. A Scene in Black and White Unfolded Four Times (2007), a video installation that is responsive to the viewer, explores the juxtaposition of images and their relationship to the space occupied by the viewer.

張培力 簡介

張培力,1957年11月生於杭州,1984年畢業於浙江美術學院(現美術學院)油畫系,現居住和工作在杭州。

1985、86年組織參與「85新空間」展覽及「池社」活動。主要作品有《X?》系列、《30X30》、《水-辭海標準版》、《(衛)字3號》、《遺言》、《陣風》等,主要從事以錄像、文字、聲音裝置、機械裝置、攝影為媒介的創作及藝術教學工作。

曾三次參加威尼斯雙年展,及里昂雙年展、悉尼雙年展、光州雙年展等重要國際展事;曾在紐約現代藝術博物館舉辦個展;作品為紐約現代藝術博物館、古根海姆博物館、法國蓬皮杜藝術中心等重要機構收藏。

Zhang Peili was born in Hangzhou, China in November 1957, he graduated from the Department of Oil Painting, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art) in1984, and currently lives and works in Hangzhou.

In 1985 and 1986, he organized and participated in the"85 New Space" exhibition and artist collective "Pond Society" activities. His major worksinclude X? series, 30X30, Water: Standard Version from Cihai Dictionary, Document on Hygiene No.3Last Words and A Gust of Wind etc..Zhang is mainly engaged in works with the media in video, text, sound installation, mechanical installation and photography, along with art education.

Zhang participated in Venice Biennale three times, and his works shown in several important international show such as Lyon Biennale, Sydney Biennale, Gwangju Biennale etc.

He held solo exhibitions at Museum of Modern Art New York and his works have been collected by prominent institutions such as Museum of Modern Art New York, Guggenheim Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou.
