高調的浙大校慶會上，英文翻譯錯誤特別顯眼

前段時間朋友圈一直被浙江大學120周年的校慶各種刷屏。

美帝曼哈頓的地標帝國大廈亮藍燈，堪培拉地標--澳洲電訊塔為之亮藍燈，廣州的小蠻腰也披上了妖嬈的藍光。（藍色應該是浙大的「校色」）

浙大校慶霸屏全球，規格之高，聲勢之大，也引發了一點點爭議。

不過我在這裡就不發表任何偏激的觀點了，首先因為昨天這篇文章我拋出了一些觀點，就受到了一些人「取關」的威脅，我不想給自己添堵；其次，我的家就在浙大旁，雖然我的大學部不在浙大念的，但因為耳濡目染的關係，對浙大還是懷有感情的。

所以，今天，我回到老本行，聊聊跟浙大校慶相關的一點英語知識。

下圖是浙大校慶大會中，領導做發言時。LED大屏上顯示的一行英文，一位眼尖的同學截圖下來，問我英文有沒有問題：

這位同學其實語感不錯，感知到了一些問題，但有說不上來。那麼，我為大家簡單分析一下：

向為人類未知領域探索，為國家和民族作出重大貢獻的前輩先賢致以最崇高的敬意。

Let』s express our highest respect to those predecessors explored the unknown fields of mankind, and to those predecessors made significant contribution to the country and people!

一些中規中矩的、寫的不錯的地方我先列舉一下，便於大家能更好的理解句子：

1. express one』s highest respect to：向…致以最崇高的敬意

2. those predecessor：那些前輩先賢

3. explored the unknown fields of mankind：探索人類未知領域

4. made significant contribution to the country and people：對國家和人民作出巨大貢獻

現在來談談問題，其實最大的問題出現在explore和made這兩個詞上。

英語的寫作有一條「鐵」的規律：一句話中只能有一個謂語動詞，而其他的動詞都應該「降格」成非謂語動詞，或者安置在從句之中。我們再來看看這句話：

Let』s express our highest respectto those predecessors exploredthe unknown fields of mankind, and to those predecessors madesignificant contribution to the country and people!

很明顯，express是整句話的謂語動詞，它應該具備「唯一性」。後面出現的動詞explored和made有一定迷惑性，因為有同學會認為它們是屬於非謂語動詞的「過去分詞」。

這裡需要插播這樣一個知識點：「分詞」和「邏輯主語」的關係，請記住這樣一個原則：

現在分詞和其邏輯主語是主動關係；過去分詞和其邏輯主語是被動關係。比如：

He is watching a kite flyingin the sky.

他正看著一隻天上飛的風箏。

* 現在分詞flying和其邏輯主語kite之間是主動關係

I particularly like the novels writtenby Dan Brown.

我尤其喜歡丹·布朗的小說。

*過去分詞written和其邏輯主語novel之間是被動關係。

我們再回到浙大校慶那個句子，「被致以崇高敬意的」有兩種人：

1. 為人類未知領域探索的前輩先賢

those predecessors explored the unknown fields of mankind

2.為國家和民族作出重大貢獻的前輩先賢

those predecessors made significant contribution to the country and people!

很明顯，explore的邏輯主語是predecessor；made的邏輯主語也是predecessor，而且它們都是主動關係，所以是不是應該調整成現在分詞，而不是過去分詞？

這句話改寫一下變成：

Let』s express our highest respect to those predecessors exploringthe unknown fields of mankind, and to those predecessors makingsignificant contribution to the country and people!

但問題是，現在分詞多表達動作正在進行，這裡顯然是描述過去的動作，所以用定語從句是最精準的，即：

Let』s express our highest respect to those predecessors whoexploredthe unknown fields of mankind, and to those predecessors whomadesignificant contribution to the country and people!

我知道肯定有人會問：校慶屏幕上的句子是不是從句引導詞who省略的情況呢？答案是：No。記住：定語從句引導詞如果充當從句的主語，是不能省略的，如果作賓語可以省略，舉例子：

The book thatyou lent me yesterday is fabulous.

昨天你借我的那本書太精彩了。

*上述句子里的that是可以省略的，因為作從句賓語。

The book that is written by Dan Brown has been sold out.

丹布朗寫的那本小說售罄了。

*上述句子里的that不能省略，因為作從句主語。

最後再補充一個句子中的小錯誤：如果你想用英語表達「對…做出貢獻」，請一定不要忘記在make和contribution中間加a，或者在contribution后加s，即，要麼：make a contribution to，要麼 make contributions to。英語中make contribution to這樣的寫法是不規範的。
