I'm still in awe of it all these years later. Dirk and the boys dropped the resilient and last ditch efforts of Brandon Roy and company, stopped the full strength, championship, Kobe-led Lakers from a 3-peat in spectacular fashion, outlasted the young and hungry trio of Westbrook, Harden, and Durant, before overcoming the Heat's triumvirate of Bosh, Wade, and Lebron.

What a ridiculous accomplishment. This man has personally made basketball worth watching. That statue is going to be huge.

Post script: I guess what I'm trying to say in this post is thank you and congratulations, Dirk. Congrats on the 2011 championship. Congrats on 19 seasons in the NBA. Congrats on 30,000 points and counting. Congrats on the beautiful family. Congrats on doing right by yourself and being an exemplar every step of the way. Congrats on making your country proud and the city of Dallas proud and your fans and loved ones proud. But most importantly, thank you for letting us all be a part of it.

They looked like they were down and out in that Portland series too. I remember Brandon Roy and the Blazers made a huge comeback in Game 4 to win the game and tie the series. And it looked like the Mavs were done after that debacle.

Yes, exactly! Good memory, man. One of the "narratives" of that title run was their uncanny ability to rally after being punched in the mouth. I've yet to see anything like it. So much veteran leadership and poise, like a rag tag group of soldiers rallying for one last ride. Just amazing.

not to undermine Dirk and the Mavs' accomplishment, but that Blazers team in the first round had some struggles of their own. Roy was already on the tail end of his career and didn't really contribute, aside from that miraculous comeback in game 4 (one of my favorite NBA moments ever).

You're 100% correct. He had undergone double arthroscopic knee procedures in January of 2011 ahead of the playoffs. The knee injuries had already reduced Roy, respectfully, to a largely toothless version of what he once was. That huzzah of his was ridiculous.

Not by much, at least according to ESPN. I wish I could find that page I remember looking at each series to see like, 12 writers/analysts, picks to win. I think it was like 60/40 for both those series in favor of Dallas. OKC might even have been a 50/50

I still can remember when DWade hit that fade away 3 thinking "this series is done" and him and Bron clowning on Dirk when he was ill.

Not only am I happy for Dirk, but I think that series taught Bron a VERY important lesson and Dirk was part of his development as a person and player due to this, more so player than person.

Never take that shit for granted and will your team to win and leave it all on the floor, and that's what Dirk did in 2011.

...and that's what Bron did in 2016. ;)

The first Big 3 season was honestly hard to watch. It was the classic example of stars taking turns going iso and putting up a 20 foot jump shot. They were still good and talented enough to put away a 60 win team in 5 games and reach Game 6 of the Finals but they weren't much going with that team other than the fact they had LeBron, Bosh and the last time Wade was a 25+ ppg scorer.
