Spring is the perfect season to visit Japan, and recently I』ve had the pleasure of taking a vacation there. From Tokyo to Kyoto, my best friend and I spent days wandering around the two beautiful cities, observing the breathtaking views of cherry blossoms.

This was my second time visiting Japan, and I came to appreciate many things about the country, including their cleanliness, delicious and low-fat food, and very considerate heated toilet seats. On the other hand, while there are many great things about Japan, there are also inconveniences that I found as a tourist.

For example, there were very few garbage bins in the public space. That was a problem for me, since I had developed a cold there and was constantly sneezing and blowing my nose. There were barely any bins to throw away my trash on the streets, in the markets, and at the subway stations. I learned to carry a small plastic bag with me everywhere I go, so I can collect trash and dispose them at the end of the day.

For a country that is recognized internationally for its technological advancements, my friend and I were also shocked to discover that their public Wi-Fi was terrible. We were constantly connected and disconnected in our attempts to use the public Wi-Fi. So much for being free! For foreigners who rely on the Internet to navigate a complex transportation system, we were lucky that I have free international data. Without it, we would have been completely lost. Visitors, please take note!

Last but not least, I realized that while the Japanese people are known to be diligent and hardworking people who take their work seriously, sometimes the culture can be a little too rigid and inflexible.

In the midst of feeling sick and tired, I had lost my train ticket on our way from Tokyo to Kyoto. My friend and I did not think it was going to be an issue, since the transportation office only needed to reprint my ticket. We had assigned seats, a photo of my lost ticket, and a receipt to prove that we had purchased two tickets. But even with these documentations, the transportation office clerk refused to reprint my ticket. When I asked her whether she could locate my assigned seat, she nodded yes, and pointed to my seat on her computer screen; when I showed her our receipt for the purchased tickets, she also admitted that I was not trying to scam or cheat the system. Yet when I asked her why she couldn』t reprint me one of the two tickets that she knew we had purchased, she simply shook her head and gave no response. At that moment, I knew there was no use for reasoning or logic. The staff only perform what they were trained to do, and being flexible to different circumstances was not one of them.

So, the takeaway from my Japan trip is: bring your own garbage bags, make sure you have international data, and don』t lose any ticket.
