Risk Factors and Causes of Male Infertility - Getting Closer to God's Voice 1985

The negative effect of overloaded exercise on male’s reproductive function

It found that endurance training at the highest level does not alter the male reproductive function. Nevertheless, a recent study suggests that long term strenuous exercise have a deleterious effect on semen parameters, and also resistance exercise shows a significant decline in free and total testosterone.

Stress is a direct factor to male fertility

Past research has associated stress with a number of health problems, including obesity and depression. Now, a new study suggests stress also reduce sperm and semen quality, which might result in male fertility.

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, among approximately 40% of infertile couples, the husband is the sole cause or contributing cause of infertility.

The main cause of male infertility is sperm abnormalities, including low sperm production or misshapen or immobile sperm.

Life stress could lower semen’s quality and quantity

In this latest study[1], the team NJ investigated whether stress may affect sperm and semen quality. The researchers assessed 193 men aged 38 to 49 between 2005 and 2008.[2]

According to researchers, they found that men who experienced two or more stressful life events in the past year had a lower percentage of sperm motility and a lower percentage of sperm of normal morphology, compared with men who did not experience any stressful life events.

researchers found that those who experienced job strains had lower levels of the hormone testosterone in their semen. Besides, men who were unemployed had lower semen quality than those who were employed.

1. Stress activate the release of glucocorticoids, steroid hormones that affect the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins could reduce testosterone levels and sperm production.

2.Stress trigger oxidative stress, in which is a physiological stress on the body caused by damage from unneutralized free radicals, which has been associated with semen quality and fertility.

Obesity and Excessive Body Fat

1. Several studies have shown that overweight and obese women have a higher rate of infertility.

2. Likewise, obesity plays a role in men fertility.

3.A study in found that 10 kg increase in the body weight may reduce fertility by nearly 10%, and the great effect for men with a body mass index (BMI) of more than 32 (Reference: Sallmén M, Sandler DP, Hoppin JA, Blair A, Baird DD (2006) Reduced fertility among overweight and obese men. Epidemiol 17: 520-523.

4. A significant reduction in the number of normal motile sperm has been observed among men with BMI over 25.

5. Studies also found that men with excess fat in the thigh and suprapubic area have poor semen quality. (Reference: Kort HI, Massey JB, Elsner CW, Mitchell-Leef D, Shapiro DB, et al. (2006)Impact of body mass index values on sperm quantity and quality. J Androl 27: 450-452.

6. A Norwegian cohort study found that low BMI also encounter the risk of infertility
